Creating a Social Media Voice

Social Media Voice - One Voice - Many OutletsYou’re website is up and running promoting your business 24/7 so you’re done right? Before the social media age (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc…) and before there were a trillion websites added to the internet that was possible.

Besides making updates to the website to keep it fresh with new and relevant data, another key component is to make sure you have social media tied into it in some form or fashion.

Linking the two, or more social media avenues, with the website is highly recommended and generally any webmaster can perform.

The easy part is to create an account (.i.e Facebook Page) to represent the small business via social media. The harder part is to make sure there is a standard social media voice, or that the communication style used will be consistent across the board and knowing what to “post/communicate” within your social media channels.

Below are some helpful tips to find your “voice”:

  • Review your fellow business owners. Do a quick search for the the top “your industry” blogs, this will give you some ideas to start with and study. You won’t be copying, but simply getting a better idea of what you don’t like or do like.
  • Identify your tone.  Simply ask yourself, “What does my “your industry services” sound like in my head?” Is it casual, fun or a serious tone? Is it formal and prestigious? Consider your product (or services) and target demographic (if you have a large range of target demographic.
  • Apply your voice in long-form writing. If you have a blog, this is a fantastic place to use your voice and connect with the audience. Sharing stories, ideas, and news will help increase your SEO, too. No blog? No problem. Simply keep the pages (especially your home page) updated and integrate some key words you think people are using to search for your services/business.

Does finding a social media voice take some initial investment in time, it sure does, but you will indeed see a ROI for your work effort in terms of increased repeat customers and new clients. Consider it as just another necessity when running a successful business.
