Content writing is very important to a website. Not having good content on a great looking and professional designed website is like having a Toyota Prius 4 cylinder motor stuffed inside a Chevy Corvette. It will look great, but its performance will not be on par.
Unless the client excelled in writing and/or marketing class, clients usually get stumped a bit on this part not knowing how or where to start. This is also the #1 reason a website is delayed from getting published on time.
Answering the following 3 questions will give us the 3 key pieces of information to integrate into any site and to help turn any visitor into a potential customer, buyer or member of your business or organization. You more than likely already have these answered but just need to formally write them out.
WHO are you?
Unless your an household brand, too many this will be the first time they have heard of you. Just like in an interview, you want to make your first impression is a good one. Make sure you present notable items that will help make you stand apart from others. This could be the length of time in business, growing members in your organization, awards about your company.
This is also a great area to make sure the web visitor, or prospects, feels that your business/organization is a safe choice and would feel comfortable with obtaining your services offered.
WHAT do you offer?
If you’re a business, what services do you provide and how can your services help the prospect. Explain not only what your services are but how they can help. Many times web visitors see something they like but not sure how it would even benefit them.
Organizations and non-profits need to make the prospect feel welcomed or as if they were already part of the association. Clearly define what you do and how you can help benefit the prospect by becoming a member or other.
HOW do I proceed?
So now that the prospect understands who you are, and what you offer its time to make sure they understand the “call-to-action”. This is where you want to clearly state the objective of what you want the prospect to do next. It can either be to simply contact you for further information or to fill out a quote for services.
The homepage content of a website is important landing page and should have all of this information easily assessable. The home page should contain roughly 3-4 paragraphs or elements with this info. Only brief summaries of each of these questions should be answered on the home page.
Each piece of content can then be linked to a sub-page/sections with more detailed information about services or products, about the company and how to contact the company.
