Source: Why make a website mobile-friendly? — Webmaster’s Mobile Guide
There are outstanding statistics that give good reason to make a website mobile-friendly. In the USA, 94% of people with smartphones search for local information on their phones. And of those 77% of mobile searches occur at a place of home or work place, where desktop or laptop devices are likely present.
If that is not enough reasoning to have a mobile-friendly site, than the change Google made this April to its search algorithm should
convince you.
Google made a huge change to its search algorithm (effective on 4/21/2015) that affects all sites that are not mobile friendly.
Here is an example of how it would affect two businesses.
You and your competitor both have great sites, provide similar services and have similar target audiences. But you have a mobile-friendly site.
Prior to Google’s change, you both would still have an equal shot at showing up on the first page during searches made on the mobile phone.
As of today, your competitor will get demoted due to not having a mobile-friendly site. So effectively your site would now be ranked higher and be returned in the search results when searches are made on a mobile phone.
The question is not should you have a mobile-friendly site, but how long can you afford not to have one?
