Introduction to email

Northwoods Web Designs (NWD), LLC offers professional secure business email services with its plans allowing hosting clients to send and receive email using their domain name. The default and supported method to access email is by using NWD, LLC RoundMail Webmail application.  Learn more about Webmail.

NWD, LLC mail service is always ready to accept messages using an email client such as Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail (or any other standard email client).

POP and IMAP are the two most common email protocols on the internet. They both allow an email client to communicate with the mail servers, but they do so in very different ways.

How POP works

POP (Post Office Protocol) is the older of the two methods for mail retrieval. In the most basic sense, POP simply grabs emails from your server and downloads them to your email client.

When using POP, emails are deleted from the server and will not be available if you attempt to access your mail from another email client or webmail. Some email clients offer a feature to leave a copy on the server and if so, should be configured to only do so for several days, not eternity.  Following are some features of POP.

  • Access: Because your email is stored on your computer, you must be at your computer to access your email.

  • Storage: You don’t need to worry about running out of online storage space. Because emails are downloaded to your computer, you can keep as many emails as your computer can store.

  • Backup: You should implement an effective backup system for your computer, in case you need to retrieve lost or deleted emails.

  • Internet connection: You must have an Internet connection to download your email, but you can view your downloaded email offline (that is, without an Internet connection).

How IMAP works

With our new professional secure business email services, IMAP is the preferred method of connecting to your email server. It simply displays the contents of your mailbox as they appear on your server. Following are some features of IMAP.

  • Access: Because emails are stored on the email server, you can access and manage your email and email folders from multiple computers or mobile devices.

  • Storage: Our standard plans include a whopping (3GB) PER Mailbox, so even though typical email maintenance is recommended, you will have more time in between cleanups (delete spam, sent mail, trash etc...).

  • Backup: Email is automatically backed up every evening. If you accidentally delete an email, your email administrator can retrieve it, even up to 30 days later.

  • Internet connection: You must have an Internet connection to access your email.
