First, what is a domain name?
A domain name is your website name. A domain name is the address where Internet users can access your website. A domain name must be registered by a registrar before it can be used. There are 100's of registrars on the internet.

Transfers between registrars happen all the time. Generally a domain name transfer does take some time and depending how long it takes for the current owner, new owner and registrar, can take between 5-10 days

The mostly standard process goes like this.
  1. The current owner must unlock the domain for transfer
  2. The current owner must then obtain and provide the transfer authorization code (aka 'EPP key', 'secret code' or 'auth code') to the new owner
  3. The new owner must then use their prefered registrar to initate a domain transfer request using the authorization code provided in step 2
  4. The current owner will receive an email to approve of the request transfer.
  5. When the current owner approves the email, the actual transfer process will begin
  6. The current owner registrar may still take up to 5-7 days to officially release the "ownership" of the domain name

So as you can see, at minimum it takes 5-7 days, and thats if the current owner/new owner complete all steps in the same day.
